Vista Hit by New Malware Figures

ACCORDING TO ANALYSIS from the Australian company PC Tools' Threat Fire user base, 58,000 PCs running Vista were compromised by at least one piece of malware over the six months to May 2008, equivalent to 27 percent, or 190,692 of the 1,513,502 machines running Windows in the user base.

In total, Vista suffered 121,380 instances of malware from its 190,000 user base, a rate of malware detection per system is proportionally lower than that of XP, which saw 1,319,144 malware infections from a user base of 1,297,828 machines, but it indicates a problem that is worse than Microsoft has been admitting to.

GTA-IV Sales Set Guinness Record

A WEEK AFTER Take-Two annouced that GTA-IV had broken launch day records, the Guinness Book of World REcords confirmed.

According to Guinness, Grand Theft Auto IV sold an impressinve 3.6 million units in its first 24 hours, totaling a record-setting US$310 million in gross sales.

The figure easily push the Rockstar game above all other entertainment record holders, including Halo 3 with $170 million in day one sales, Spiderman 3 with $60 Million and Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows at $220 million.

"The record establishes GTA IV as the most profitable entertainment release of all-time, far surpassing other video game, film and book releases, "said Guinness.

Version of Windows Arrive Early?

MICROSOFT RECENTLY dropped two strong hints that the next version of its Windows operating system will arrive in 2009, up to a year sooner than anticipated. The hints might signal Microsoft's intention to cut its losses with Windows Vista, which customers, especially large companies, have grudgingly accepted or shunned.

The company has long said that it wants to release Windows 7 about three years after Vista, and most outsiders had pegged 2010 as a likely arrival year for the new OS. But recently in Miami, Micro-soft chairman Bill Gates reportedly said in response to a question about _Vistaj "gome-time in the next year or so we'll have a new version."

And in announcing plans to extend the availability of Windows XP Home for low-cost laptops, Microsoft said it would retire the OS only after June 30, 2010, or one year after the release of Windows 7, whichever came later.

The announcement's wording implies that the company may be targeting the middle of next year as a release milestone for Windows 7.

Microsoft has divulged few of the changes planned for the new operating system.

OpenOffice- 3.0 (BETA)

OpenOffice's recent pace of development is good news for users. The beta of v3.0 already has noticeable visual and performance improvements. A new Start Center is in and the newly integrated support for MS Office 2007 file formats works at a basic level. Calc (for spreadsheets) now supports more columns and Writer (for documents) adds formatting for notes in the margin. You can also view multiple pages at a time on widescreen monitors. Google Docs Goes Offline!!!

GOOGLE DOCS is a key feature that makes it a true competitor to Microsoft Office: offline access. It's promising, but the early beta with limitations. The offline version relies on Google Gears, an offline syncing technology; once you've installed Gears on your PC, Docs syncs your documents between its servers and your browser. Thereafter, you can access docs. google.com offline, and all changes that you make to documents are saved when you reconnect.

That's the theory, at least.

The offline tools are rather limited: You can't create a new document, view a document's revision history, alter the style, insert photos, or check your spelling. It's best suited for editing documents you've already created, and power users are going to want to stay away for the moment.

Google needs to do some polishing to make this work seamlessly; but once it does, it could be a great tool.
