OpenOffice's recent pace of development is good news for users. The beta of v3.0 already has noticeable visual and perfor­mance improvements. A new Start Center is in and the newly integrated support for MS Office 2007 file formats works at a basic level. Calc (for spread­sheets) now supports more col­umns and Writer (for docu­ments) adds formatting for notes in the margin. You can also view multiple pages at a time on widescreen monitors.
